On Sunday, I met up with my friends Leslie and Anna to go to the Kawagoe Matsuri. A matsuri is a type of festival. They usually involve floats being paraded through the street and many different booths with food and games. The Kawagoe Matsuri is one of the bigger festivals in Saitama prefecture, so it was pretty crowded. It was fun though! We walked around to take in all the sights. We also ate a bunch of yummy food. The three of us would take turns buying food and them we would share it, so that we could have a little bit of a lot of different foods. I had shaved ice, karaage (a type of fried chicken), sweet potatoes, kari kari chiizu (a thin crispy dough with melted cheese in the middle), and taiyaki. My friend Leslie bought tiny cakes that were shaped like Pikachu. And that isn't even a quarter of the different kinds of food they were selling at the matsuri. I wish I could've eaten even more of it because it all looked so good!
The other big attraction at the festival was getting to see the festival floats. This event happened later in the afternoon. There were around a dozen floats that they pulled through the streets in different sections of the festival area. People of the floats play traditional music as they're pulled through the town. If two floats at the Kawagoe Matsuri meet at an intersection, they stop to have a musical battle. We unfortunately weren't able to stay at the festival late enough to see a lot of the floats, but the few that we were able to see were pretty cool.
Here's my photos of the matsuri!
The weekend was a nice break from work. The end of last week was midterms at my usual school, so in addition to creating a English listening midterm, I got to grade 300+ copies of said midterm. I'm glad that midterms are over and I can get back to my usual schedule!
